Originally called “Backrub,” the search engine was renamed “Google” in 1997, a play on the word “googol,” which refers to the number 1 followed by 100 zeros.

Google quickly became the most popular search engine on the internet, and the company’s mission is “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.” Over the years, Google has expanded into other areas, including online advertising, cloud computing, software, hardware, and more.
